Coach marked its 85th anniversary with its Spring 2027 collection, shown in downtown New York under the guiding phrase "Love Is the Message."

Creative director Stuart Vevers was explicit about what he didn't want to do: "I didn't want to do a retrospective. I didn't want to do something too reverential to the archive. I felt the best way to honour 85 years was actually to look forward."

The collection built on Coach's recognisable archetypes - trench coats, leather jackets, tuxedos, bias-cut dresses, Western boots - and then, in Vevers' words, turned them inside out: exposed stitching, frayed hems, softened tailoring, materials deliberately mixed rather than kept pure. Wool and leather were pieced together with a chevron stitch to form muscle-tank vests and coats. Blazers arrived decorated with necklaces of hanging watch-cases and metallic bow-shaped brooches - the visual remnants of a birthday party the clothes seemed to have already lived through. The palette moved from dove grey, soft brown and black into periwinkle, powder pink, mint and reflective metallics as the show progressed, with sequins and shimmering surfaces carrying eveningwear toward the finale.

The show closed with eight voguing dancers, choreographed by Arturo Lyons, leading models, musicians and guests through confetti into the newly revealed Coach Club 85, where the anniversary celebrations continued late into the night at Basketball City.

The front row matched the occasion's scale: global ambassadors Elle Fanning and Japan's Lilas Ikuta were joined by Troye Sivan, Storm Reid, Yasmin Finney, Avantika Vandanapu, Iris Law and Ayra Starr, with further Japanese guests KOHARU, Haruka Fukuhara and Jyutaro Yamanaka rounding out a genuinely international guest list for a house built, and headquartered, entirely in New York.

For a brand old enough to have earned nostalgia as a legitimate creative direction, Vevers' choice to treat 85 years as licence to keep moving forward - rather than a milestone to memorialise - reads as the more confident bet.
