Why Southeast Asia's Secondhand Luxury Market Keeps Growing
Rising middle-class demand and platforms built for trust are turning pre-owned designer goods into a genuine local industry.

The Asia-Pacific secondhand luxury goods market was valued at roughly US$8.6 billion in 2024, according to market research firm IMARC Group, with analysts projecting continued growth in the high single digits annually through the next decade driven by rising middle class incomes, growing digital platform adoption, and an increasing desire among younger buyers for unique, pre-owned pieces over new ones.
What distinguishes Southeast Asia's version of this boom from more mature secondhand markets in Japan and South Korea is what buyers actually prioritise. Where condition and authentication rigour tend to dominate purchasing decisions in Japan and Korea's more established resale cultures, price and availability play a comparatively larger role across Southeast Asia and India - a reflection of markets where affordable access to luxury, rather than collector-grade condition, is the primary draw for a newer, younger base of buyers.
Local platforms have built their own ecosystems around that dynamic rather than simply importing a Western resale model wholesale. Singapore-headquartered Carousell, alongside a growing number of local marketplaces across the region, has built peer-to-peer trading infrastructure specifically suited to Southeast Asia's mix of convenience, social commerce and price sensitivity - a notably different approach from the authentication-heavy, consignment-store model that dominates secondhand luxury in Europe and North America.
The broader Asia-Pacific luxury goods market itself, separate from resale, is projected to grow from roughly US$157 billion in 2025 to nearly US$166 billion in 2026, according to Mordor Intelligence - with India and Southeast Asia specifically flagged as sources of a large new cohort of first-time affluent shoppers. Read together, the two trends suggest a regional luxury market growing on two fronts simultaneously: more first-time buyers entering new, and a parallel generation treating pre-owned as the smarter way in.
