CFDA PRESIDENT STEVEN KOLB RESIGNS AFTER PHYSICALLY RESTRAINING A PETA PROTESTER

Steven Kolb has resigned as president and CEO of the Council of Fashion Designers of America, ending a twenty-year run leading the organisation just days after being placed on leave over a physical confrontation caught on video at New York Fashion Week.

The incident occurred on 13 September during the runway show for Cos, the H&M-owned brand, at WSA in New York, when PETA protesters disrupted the presentation. Footage that circulated widely showed Kolb leaving his seat to physically restrain one protester, at one point holding her down and placing a hand over her mouth, and pushing another. The CFDA board placed him on leave the following Monday, 14 September, while it reviewed the incident.

Kolb announced his resignation four days later, on 18 September, in a post on his Substack, Steven Says, rather than citing the protest confrontation directly as the cause. "After twenty years leading the CFDA, I have made the difficult decision to step down as CEO and President," he wrote, calling it "the right moment for both me and the organization to begin a new chapter." He pointed to the CFDA's financial strengthening, expanded scholarship and philanthropic programmes, and support for emerging and underrepresented designers as the achievements he was proudest of.

The CFDA responded with a statement on Instagram acknowledging his departure: "Steven Kolb has been a dedicated leader and tireless champion of American fashion throughout his more than two decades at the CFDA, including fifteen years as CEO... He leaves the organization well positioned, with a clear mission and dedicated team, to carry out the important work ahead."

PETA, for its part, used the moment to renew its call for Cos and parent company H&M Group to remove wool from their collections entirely, the stated purpose of the original protest.

No successor has yet been named. For an organisation that has operated under essentially one leader for two decades, a resignation this abrupt - and this publicly tied to a viral moment of physical confrontation - leaves American fashion's most influential trade body facing a genuinely uncertain leadership transition at the close of a fashion month it was still actively running.
