Cannes 2026: Inside a Red Carpet Where Movie Stars Doubled as Fashion's Front Row
Tilda Swinton in Chanel couture, John Travolta's daily beret and a jury stacked with style icons defined the 79th festival

The 79th Cannes Film Festival turned the French Riviera into fashion's most glamorous seaside runway for twelve days in May 2026.
With a jury that doubled as a style panel: Demi Moore, Ruth Negga and Chloé Zhao all sat on it, alongside a film lineup pulling in stars from The Black Ball, starring Penélope Cruz and Glenn Close, to Fjord with Renate Reinsve and Sebastian Stan, and Paper Tiger, starring Scarlett Johansson, Adam Driver and Miles Teller. On the carpet, Tilda Swinton wore Chanel Spring-Summer 2026 couture, Kristen Stewart appeared twice in Chanel for the "Full Phil" photocall and screening, and Ruth Negga collected the 2026 Kering Women in Motion Award in sultry Saint Laurent. John Travolta, making his directorial debut with Propeller One-Way Night Coach, wore a different beret to the festival every day, telling reporters "the old-school directors wore berets." Adding a meta layer to the whole affair, the cast and crew of HBO's The White Lotus were spotted filming season four — set at the Cannes Film Festival itself — on the festival's actual red carpet.
For twelve days, cinema and couture were, quite literally, filming each other.
