Bottega Veneta SS27 gives craftsmanship room to move

Louise Trotter loosens the house’s material language with openwork textures, fringe and a considered transition towards summer.

Bottega Veneta SS27 gives craftsmanship room to move

Bottega Veneta’s Spring/Summer 2027 collection approached the change of season through the behaviour of clothes. Louise Trotter’s third show for the house, presented on 26 September 2026 in Milan, moved from protective outerwear towards more open constructions. Intrecciato, crochet and fringe supplied different ways to make a surface active. The collection’s interest lies in how those techniques affect the garment’s relationship with the body, giving craftsmanship a presence beyond the close-up detail. [1][2]

For a Singapore reader, the seasonal narrative requires translation. A wardrobe organised around a European winter-to-summer transition is not a direct account of dressing in the tropics. Yet the underlying question is highly relevant: how can clothing offer a sense of substance without appearing cumbersome? Trotter’s answer makes texture, spacing and movement central to the image. It provides a useful way to discuss luxury through the experience of wearing rather than recognition alone.

## Weaving becomes a wider language

Intrecciato is central to Bottega Veneta’s identity. In this collection, coverage records both literal weaving and related effects: a basket-weave T-shirt, leather scarves around the waist and enlarged woven accessories. The weave operates across different scales, making the house recognisable through a method of construction rather than only through a repeated emblem. [1][2]

That gives it unusual flexibility. The same idea can appear solid and architectural at one scale, more intimate at another. A woven surface can also complicate the distinction between decoration and structure, because the pattern is inseparable from how the object is assembled. For the viewer, this is a reminder to ask what a signature actually does. A motif may be printed onto an otherwise ordinary object. A construction method can shape its flexibility, appearance and way of responding to light.

## Lightness without visual emptiness

Reporting describes knotted hems, openwork crochet, handmade lace and fringe that changes shape during walking. Colour punctuates a quieter base, including lilac and yellow combinations and more vivid pieces. The design devices introduce air and motion without requiring the collection to abandon material richness. [1][2]

Our interpretation is that this offers a more nuanced idea of lightness than simple transparency. A garment can look open because its surface contains space. It can feel visually lighter because its edge moves freely. It can reveal a lighter layer through the way an outer piece is handled. These effects are not identical, and none establishes comfort on its own. They nevertheless expand the visual vocabulary of summer clothes beyond the familiar choice between bare skin and a flat, minimal silhouette.

## Movement completes the surface

Fringe is particularly revealing because a still photograph captures only one stage of its appearance. Its pattern and volume change when the body moves. That gives the garment a temporal quality: it cannot be fully understood as a stationary composition. The wearer becomes part of its visual construction, bringing rhythm and direction to an otherwise fixed object.

This relationship helps explain why craft should be evaluated beyond its apparent complexity. A painstaking technique has greater design significance when it changes how a piece lives on the body. More work is not automatically better work. The relevant question is whether the result creates an experience that a simpler construction could not provide. A moving edge, a flexible weave or an open surface may make that distinction visible in a way that a heavily decorated but inert garment cannot.

## The set continues the material conversation

The show seating extended the focus on making. Reports identify lacquered cardboard stools by artist Ilya Goldman Gubin, their forms derived from crumpled boxes. This detail introduces a different kind of transformation: an everyday material gains presence through handling and finish. It sits beside the clothes as another example of attention changing the apparent value of an object. [3]

It would be too simple to treat the stools as evidence of the collection’s environmental performance. A material story and a verified impact assessment are different things. Their more useful role here is aesthetic. They suggest that luxury can depend on perception, labour and transformation, rather than the starting material’s prestige alone. That is an interesting idea to carry back to the garments, where an apparently modest construction may produce an unusually expressive result.

## Reading Bottega for a tropical wardrobe

Our Singapore edit would begin with surface and proportion. An openwork layer over a simpler base can supply depth without requiring several competing garments. A textured bag may connect an understated outfit to the house’s material language. If the main piece moves dramatically, a quiet shoe can help keep attention on that movement. These suggestions preserve the design relationships while allowing the actual amount of coverage to change.

Practical decisions need to remain specific. Leather’s visual flexibility does not establish its suitability for a hot outdoor afternoon. Crochet’s openings do not guarantee that every yarn or lining will feel cool. Trying a garment while seated, reaching and walking reveals information that runway footage cannot. The most useful lesson is to look for clothing in which technique contributes to use. Beauty and comfort can support each other, but the relationship has to be tested in the individual piece.

Material complexity is easiest to appreciate when the rest of an outfit establishes a clear scale. A deeply worked bag beside an equally elaborate top and a moving skirt may leave the eye with no point of entry. Reducing one of those elements can make the remaining work more visible. This is not a universal rule against richness. It is a way of judging how several kinds of craft interact. The same principle applies when viewing a collection: an uncomplicated look can reveal the significance of the more complex ones around it. For the wearer, editing becomes a means of respecting the object. Giving a special surface room to register may communicate its character more convincingly than surrounding it with other equally expensive or labour-intensive pieces. The quality of the relationship matters more than the total amount of work displayed.

## Where restraint still matters

The collection also prompts a question about editing. If every surface demonstrates an elaborate technique, the eye may struggle to recognise which one deserves its attention. A quiet garment can make surrounding craftsmanship more vivid. This is equally true in a personal wardrobe: simplicity can provide the space in which a complicated object becomes legible.

Bottega Veneta SS27 has its clearest relevance in that balance. Trotter turns established house methods towards motion and openness, making material expertise part of the outfit’s overall behaviour. For StraitsG readers, the collection offers a way to assess luxury more closely: how does a woven or worked surface change the object, how does it move, and how does it fit into a day? Those questions remain useful long after a seasonal image has left the feed.
